The Catholic Priesthood - What's It All About?

ImageQ.1  What is a Catholic Priest?
A.     The priest is a baptized man who has received the sacrament of Holy Orders.  He has been ordained to the priesthood in a special ceremony, "to feed the Church by the word and grace of God"; consecrated for a special mission, he builds up the People of God and works for the salvation of others.

Who is a Priest?
ImageOn the occasion of his Golden Jubilee of priestly ordination, Pope John Paul II wrote an autobiographical treatise on the priesthood, Gift and Mystery. In answering the question, Who is the priest? he explained that a priest is “a steward of the mysteries of God.” A priest exercises his ministry in virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders which he receives at ordination. Unlike other vocations, priesthood is not defined in the first instance by what a priest does, by his function. The priest’s is an ontological vocation. By that we mean that his call to be a priest is first and foremost a matter of his being one with Christ.

Sacrificial Nature of Priesthood
Homily given by Fr. John Woodcock on the occasion of his Golden Jubilee of Ordination, July 2006.
A time of Jubilee - what is it? It is a time of celebration and for the most part marks off either 25 or 50 years of someone's state in life or of some event. There are other years that merit attention, but for an individual person 25 or 50 years marks off the state of life of marriage, consecrated life and on this occasion, priesthood.
